Language :

  • Official languages in India are, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannad, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Odiya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Konkani, Manipuri, Nepali and Sindhi.
  • These Indian languages have dialects, but they are now on the decline.
  • Dialects are the important part of our heritage and timely steps should be taken to nurture them,
  • Hindi, has reached everywhere through the medium of Hindi movies.
  • Hindi movies played important role to unite the country by language.
Know This :

  • 19 dialects are spoken in the State of Nagaland.
  • In 1961, the Kohima radio station made broadcasts in 25 languages. which included English, Hindi, Naga dialects and 16 Naga languages.
  • In Maharashtra many dialects like Konkani, Malvani and Ahirani are spoken.

English language :

  • After 1990 the importance of the English language has been increased in India  due to the process of globalisation which began.
  • English is becoming the language of livelihood, it opens the doors to multiple job opportunities.
  • Though Indians are at the forefront in learning English, it is also necessary to ensure that this process does not endanger the existence of regional languages.

Sports:

Sports :

  • During the pre-independence period, only a few selected games were known to Indian people.
  • However, some sportspersons changed the situation.
  • Geet Sethi won the national championship of billiards at the age of 15.
  • He has won many national and international championships.
  • His success made billiards popular in India.
  • Thus he made a new field available to rising sportspersons in India.

Cricket :

  • India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev.
  • Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar set the record of the maximum number of centuries in test cricket.
  • India won Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket in 1985.
  • As a result, cricket is now played across India but at the cost of indigenous games.
  • Many movies on the theme of cricket have been produced.

Asiad and Olympic Games :

  • India has been participating in Asian and Olympic games.
  • Karnam Malleshwari won Bronze Medal in Weightlifting at Sydney Olympics in 2000.
  • India’s participation increased in various Olympic games such as hockey, badminton, tennis, swimming, weightlifting and archery.

Theatre and films :

  • Theatre and films are important aspects of Indian life.
  • The early plays were very long. These were on mythological and historical themes.
  • The form, techniques, duration of plays have all changed now.
  • The place of the ‘musicals’ has been taken by the dramas on political and social subjects.
  • The black and white movies are replaced by colour movies.
  • Movies reflect contemporary themes.
  • Many of the movies are now shot at foreign locations.
  • Hindi movies now compete with global movies.
  • Many movies are translated into foreign languages.
  • In English movies, translation in Hindi appears on screen as sub-titles.
  • The duration of movies has reduced from 3-4 hours to 1-1/2 hours.
  • The concept of one screen and one cinema hall has given way to multiplexes.
  • The days of a movie running for 100 weeks in one cinema hall are over. Now one movie runs in thousands of cinema halls in India and abroad simultaneously.
  • Production of movies has attained the status of industry. The industry now employs crores of people.
  • The movie industry in regional languages is also thriving.

Role of Movies in Social awareness:

Role of Movies in Social awareness :

Movies have long lasting effect on people. It can be used for creating awareness among people about :

  • Superstitions, injustice, violence and other prevalent social problems.
  • They throw light on superstitions, injustice and oppressions which mar our society.
  • Movies dubbed in local languages. Subtitles are also provided for movies in english or any other language for wider reach.
  •  A movie with new idea, new themes on social harmony and patriotism will inspire the people.

Newspapers :

  • The changing lifestyle has affected the newspapers and in turn the individuals and community as a whole.
  • After independence, newspapers not only gave news but also gave inputs to industry and commerce.
  • The objectives of newspapers are: to shape public opinion, to direct it towards constructive work, at times lead the latter, to carry on the task of public education, to keep a watch over the government.
  • Newspapers were earlier the mouthpieces of the taluka or district. Now they face tough competition from the state level newspaper chains.
  • Their scope has enlarged to raising funds for drought and flood affected people, helping meritorious students from lower income group; to go for higher education and organization or sponsoring cultural programmes.

Television :

Television :

  • Until 1990's television was a monopoly of the state government. After liberalisation in 1990's a large number of private channels have entered television.
  • Television came to India during the post-independence period.
  • Earlier it was black and white. Now it is coloured,
  • Earlier it was limited to some selected programme; and fixed time-slots.
  • Gradually its scope was enlarged to include educational programmes and news bulletins.
  • Ramayana and Mahabharat serials were very popular.
  • CNN channel telecast the live coverage of Iraq war in 1991.
  • STAR (Satellite Television Asia Region) a private media house entered India in 1998.
  • The language, the technique of presentation, studios equipped with the latest technology and the use of OB (Outdoor Broadcasting) vans have expanded the scope of Indian T. V. They have brought in transparency and variety.
  • The TV has great impact on politics as it has connected the entire country.
