Precipitation

Maharashtra Board-Class 9-Geography-Chapter-5

Solution

Question 1

Identify the precipitation type with the help of the description given:

(a) It is the main source of the water that you use. Sometimes it is torrential and sometimes continuous. Most of the agriculture in India is dependent on it.

Answer :

Rain

(b) It seems as if water droplets are floating in the atmosphere. In London, one cannot see the Sun till the afternoon during winters because of this phenomenon.

Answer :

Fog

(c) It never precipitates like this in equatorial areas. Precipitation in the solid form sometimes causes damage to the crops.

Answer :

Hail Shower

(d) A white cotton like layer spreads on the earth’s surface. Because of this form of precipitation, the State of Jammu and Kashmir has to change its capital in winters. In Maharashtra, it does not precipitate like this.

Answer :

Snowfall

Question 2

Look at the following pictures and identify the correct rainfall type.

Answer :

(A) Convectional rainfall

(B) Orthographic rainfall

(C) Cyclonic rainfall

Question 3.

Look at the figures above and answer the following questions:

(1) In fig B, on which side of the mountain is it raining more?

Answer :

The windward side of the mountain in figure ‘B’ receives more rainfall

(2) Shade the rain shadow region in fig B and name it.

Answer :

(3) What is the difference between A and C?

Answer :

Figure ‘A’ is related to convectional rainfall and equatorial region receives such rain. Figure ‘C’ is related to cyclonic rainfall and temperate region receives such rain.

(4) Stormy winds and floods are associated with which rainfall type?

Answer :

Stormy winds and floods are associated with convectional rainfall

(5) What type of rainfall occurs in Singapore?

Answer :

Singapore is located much close to the equator. Hence the rainfall that occurs in Singapore is of convectional type of rain.

Question 4. Identify the odd man out :

(1) Orographic rainfall, acid rain, cyclonic rainfall, convectional rainfall

Answer :

Acid rain

(2) Snowfall, rainfall, hailstones, dew

Answer :

Dew

(3) Thermometer, rain gauge, anemometer, measuring jar

Answer :

Measuring jar

Question 5. Answer in brief:

(1) In what ways does precipitation occur on the earth?

Answer :

Water falling either in solid state or in liquid state from the clouds to the ground it is called precipitation.

(2) Comment on the rainfall occuring in the rain shadow area.

Answer :

Rain shadow area gets very less rainfall. In fact, that is the reason the very region is called rain shadow region.

(3) Which type of rainfall occurs in most of the world? Why?

Answer :

  • Most of the world experiences orographic rain.
  • Because water bodies cover approximately 70% of the earth's surface, the proportion of moist air moving from water bodies to land is common.
  • Mountain ranges and hills are common relief features on the land, and winds carrying moist air are blocked by these landforms.
  • Winds then begin to blow along the mountain's slope, causing condensation and rainfall.

(4) If condensation occurs closer to the earth’s surface, what types of forms become visible?

Answer :

When the condensation or solidification of water vapour in the atmosphere takes place near the surface, then condensation in form of fog, dew and frost becomes visible.

(5) What precautions should be taken while measuring rainfall?

Answer :

Following precautions should be taken while measuring rainfall:

  • The rain gauge must be kept outside in the open air.
  • It is kept on a 30 cm high platform.
  • Nothing shall prevent rainwater from accumulating in the rain gauge.
  • In areas with heavy rainfall, the amount of rainfall must be measured every three hours.

Question 6. Distinguish between -

(1) Dew and frost

Answer :

Dew Frost
Dew is formed due to condensation near the surface of the earth. If the temperature of the air near the

surface falls below freezing point, the frost is formed.

When air close to surface of the earth

comes in contact with very cold object,

small water droplets stick to cold object is called dew.

When the temperature of air is less than 0°C, water vapour turns into frozen water droplets due to sublimation process and then a frost is formed.

(2) Snow and hail

Answer :

Snow Hail
Sublimation process leads to snow formation. Hails are formed due to concentric layer

cause due to vertical, upward movement of air.

Snow is normally found in winters. Hails are normally found in summers
When water vapour comes in contact with very cold air, snowflakes are formed. Very high temperature and upward movement of air leads to solidification of water droplets and hails are formed.
