Strength in Diversity :  We learn to respect each other’s way of life. We even adopt certain traditions from others. This helps to increase the feeling of unity in the society

  • Diversity is our rich social heritage.
  • We have diversity of religions, language and culture.
  • Different customs are observed and different festivals are celebrated in the different regions.
  • A feeling of unity in diversity has evolved by living together for thousands of years.
  • To live with different groups is to experience co-existence. It increases the level of mutual understanding.
  • Diversity is our great strength as it promotes mutual understanding, acquaints people with customs and ways of living, promotes respect for the others and creates unity. We are able to fight social and natural calamity when we stand united.

The principle of secularism :

Secularism is a core principle of our Constitution. In order to promote unity in diversity, India has accepted the principle of secularism. As such India is a secular state, wherein.

  • No religion is recognized as the religion of our country.
  • Every person has the freedom of worship as per their religion or the religion of their choice.
  • There can be no discrimination among people on the basis of their religion. The people of all religions are treated equally by the State.
  • Opportunities for education, means of livelihood and government jobs are made available to all. There is no discrimination on the basis of religion.
  • There are special provision in the Constitution for the protection of religious arid linguistic minorities. Minorities are free to protect and preserve their linguistic and cultural identities. They are also free to bring about the development of their own communities through education.
  • The principle of secularism has helped to maintain religious harmony in Indian society.

The contribution of society to our development :

Cooperation :

Cooperation:

  • Cooperation among the individuals is the very basis of the society.
  • Cooperation is the process of sharing and helping each other in solving problems and removing difficulties.
  • Cooperation is to extend help to each other.
  • Family will not survive, day-to-day life will hinder and society will not make progress in the absence of cooperation.
  • It is a process of inclusion and of moving ahead taking along all sections of society.

Tolerance and mutual understanding :

Tolerance and mutual understanding : Misconceptions about each other leads to conflicts. It is in nobody’s interest to keep a conflict going for a long time. People find a way to resolve conflicts through compromise and understanding.

  • Tolerance and mutual understanding will enable us to resolve differences peacefully. Perpetuating differences and indulging in conflicts is not in the interest of anyone. Therefore, we must adjust and arrive at an amicable compromise.
  • This spirit of tolerance, accommodation and mutual understanding will make our social life richer.
  • It will preserve peace and social harmony.

Opportunity :

Opportunity : In society, we play different roles.

  • Opportunity to perform different roles is provided to us by the society.
  • We must carry out duties related to each of our roles within and outside family.
  • Every role entails certain responsibilities
  • Our role changes from time to time.

Regulation of society : It is necessary for its smooth functioning.

  • In the earlier times the social regulation was undertaken by means of customs and traditions.
  • In modern times, besides the customs and traditions, laws are means of social regulation.
  • Modern society is regulated by laws and governmental institutions at the local level.
  • Local governments play an important role in social regulation in present times.
