Displacement : Change of place of an object is called displacement.
Motion : The continuous displacement of an object is called motion. An object in motion continuously undergoes displacement.
Types of motion :
Linear motion
- Uniform linear motion
- Non-uniform linear motion
Non-linear motion
- Oscillatory motion
- Circular motion
- Random motion
- Periodic motion
Linear motion : The motion of an object in a straight line is called linear motion
- Uniform linear motion : When the distance traversed by an object along a straight line in unit time is the same, the motion is called uniform linear motion.
- Non-uniform linear motion: When the distance traversed by an object along a straight line in unit time keeps on changing, the motion is called non-uniform linear motion.
Examples : Uniform linear motion - The soldiers on a parade keep on moving in the same uniform motion in a straight line. Their motion does not increase or decrease.
Non-uniform linear motion - The girl coming down a slide does not show uniform motion. Though her motion is in straight line, it keeps on increasing.
Non-linear motion : When an object moves but not in a straight line, it is called non-linear motion.
Non-linear motion is of the following sub-types :
(1) Oscillatory motion: The motion in which an object goes in one direction and comes back again to the original position is called oscillatory motion. Oscillatory motion is non-linear motion and has a fixed direction.
(2) Circular motion : The motion of an object along a circular path is called Circular motion.
(3) Periodic motion : The motion of a moving object in which it passes through a certain point again and again after a fixed period is called periodic motion.
Random motion: The motion that changes its direction and speed continuously is called random motion.
While chasing a butterfly in a garden, we do not run along a definite path, but we run anyhow in an attempt to follow it. A butterfly constantly flits from one flower to another. There is no definite direction to its motion. Such motion is called random motion.
Speed : The distance traversed by an object in unit time is called the speed of that object-
- To find the speed of any moving object we have to understand the ratio of distance and the time required to cover the distance.
- Speed = Distance traversed/Time required for traversing the distance
- The unit of speed is Kilometre / hour or metre / second.
