The Satavahanas, the Vakatakas. the Chalukyas and the Pallavas were the important dynasties of Southern India.

(2) After the decline of the Maurya Empire which local kings became independent ?

Answer :

The rulers in North India as well as in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in the South India established their independent power after the decline of the Maurya empire.

Question-6. Anwer in brief.

(1) Write about the achievements of Mahendravarman.

Answer :

  • The Pallava king Mahendravarma was an able ruler and a man of learning.
  • He had written a book on music.
  • He encouraged painting, sculpture and other arts.

(2) What is meant by ‘Tri-samudra-toyapeet-vahana’.

Answer :

  • We find the description of the valour of king Gautamiputra Satakarni on a stone inscription in a cave at Nashik.
  • His valour is described in the words : ‘Tri-Samudra-toya-peet-vahan’ meaning ‘One whose horses have drunk the water of three seas’.

(3) What goods were exported from the Muziris port ?

Answer :

  • Muziris port was near Kochi on the coast of Kerala.
  • From this port spices, pearls, precious stones and other goods were exported to Rome and the other countries in the west.
