(1) The Coronation of Shivaji Maharaj

Answer

  • The foundation of Maratha Swaraj involved a continuous struggle for over thirty years.
  • Coronation of Shivaji Mahara was necessary to gain general recognition as sovereign independent state.
  • There were two traditions of religious ceremonies in India - Vedic and Tantric.
  • Shivaji Maharaj honoured both the traditions and had two coronation ceremonies performed.
  • Shivaji Maharaj was formally crowned, according to the vedic rituals, by Gagabhatt at Raigad on 6th June, 1674.
  • On 24th September 1674, he had his second coronation performed under the guidance of Nischalpuri Gosavi.
  • On the occasion of coronation, a gold coin called Hon and copper coin called Shivrai were minted, with the legend ‘Shri Raja Shivachhatrapati’ inscribed on them.
  • All royal correspondence, after the coronation, was carried with the words ‘Kshatriyakulaavantansa Shri Raja Shivchhatrapati’.
  • Through these coronations, Shivaji Maharaj became Chhatrapati of the Swaraj.
  • The coronation of Shivaji Maharaj was a revolutionary event in the history of Medieval India.

(2) Escape from Agra

Answer

  • On the guarantee of safety given by Jaisingh, Shivaji Maharaj agreed to visit Agra.
  • Shivaji Maharaj, accompanied by Prince Sambhaji and a few of his trusted people, set out for Agra.
  • Aurangzeb did not treat him with due honour at his court, because of which Shivaji Maharaj expressed his anger
  • Seeing this, Aurangzeb was put Shivaji Maharaj under house arrest.
  • He adroitly escaped from Agra and reached Maharashtra safely and then Rajgad,
  • He had left Prince Sambhaji at Mathura who was also brought safely to Rajgad.

(3) Shivaji Maharaj’s campaign of the South.

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj undertook his campaign of the South in October, 1677.
  • He went to Golconda, where he called on the Qutubshah and entered into a treaty of friendship with him.
  • He tried to convince, without success, his half-brother Vyankoji, the ruler of Thanjavur to participate in the activities of the Swaraj.
  • He conquered Bengaluru and Hoskote in Karnataka, Jinji and Vellore forts and some parts of Adilshahi kingdom.
  • He appointed Raghunath Narayan Hanamante as the chief administrator to look after these conquered territories and returned to Swaraj after two years.
  • Shivaji Maharaj also annexed the fort of Jinji which proved to be of great importance in later years.

(4) Shivaji Maharaj’s preparation for the coronation.

Answer

  • For the coronation, a grand and valuable throne of thirty-two ‘mann’ of gold was made.
  • There were eight bejewelled pillars on eight sides of the throne.
  • A plenty of money, clothes, elephant and horses were donated to the scholars who had come to attend the coronation.
  • Prince Sambhaji Raje has described the coronation ceremony in his treatise ‘Budhabhushanam’.

(1) Shivaji Maharaj entered into the Treaty of Purandar.

Answer

  • To control and keep a check on activities of Shivaji Maharaj, Aurangzeb sent Mirzaraja Jaisingh to Pune.
  • Jaisingh sent Mughal forces to various parts of the Swaraj to capture the forts that Shivaji Maharaj possesed.
  • The huge army of Dilerkhan had ravaged the territory of Swaraj.
  • Murarbaji Deshpande died a hero’s death while defending Purander.
  • His subject suffered great losses due to conflict with the Mughals.
  • Considering the seriousness off the situation, Shivaji Maharaj entered into the Treaty of Purandar.

(2) Shivaji Maharaj took an aggressive stand against the Mughals.

Answer

Shivaji Maharaj took an aggressive stand against the Mughals, because

  • He wanted to recapture the forts and territories given to the Mughals as per the Treaty off Purandar.
  • He wanted to destabilize the Mughal rule in the Decean by invading the territories under their control.
  • In this way, Shivaji Maharaj took an aggressive stand against the Mughals.
