Solution

Question 1.

Two boxes in different hemispheres are given in the following diagram. The IDL passes through both the boxes. In one box, the meridian, day and date is given. Find the day and date for the other box.

Answer :

(A) 1500 E Meridian : Tuesday 16th Aug. 6.00am. (0600hrs)

(B) 800 W Meridian : Saturday 24th Dec. 10.00pm (2200hrs)

Question 2.

Select the correct option :

(1) While crossing the IDL, a person will have to add one day when travelling from

(a) East to West

(b) West to East

(c) South to North

(d) North to South

Answer :

(a) East to West

(2) If it is Wednesday 10 a.m. at 150 E meridian, then what will be the time at

IDL?

(a) Wednesday 6 a.m.

(b) Wednesday 9 p.m.

(c) Thursday 2 p.m.

(d) Thursday 6 p.m.

Answer :

(b) Wednesday 9 p.m.

(3) According to the international convention, at which meridian does the day and date change occurs?

Answer :

(d) 1800

(4) At which direction of the IDL does a new day start immediately?

(a) East

(b) West

(c) North

(d) South

Answer :

(b) West

(5) IDL brings coordination in which of the following?

(a) GPS system

(b) Defence departments

(c) Transportation schedules

(d) Determining the hemisphere

Answer :

(c) Transportation schedules

Question 3.

Give geographical reasons

(1) IDL is proving to be very useful in today’s times

Answer :

  • Transportation, communication, foreign travel, and international trade have all increased dramatically as a result of globalisation.
  • Furthermore, this transportation, travel, and trade occurs between relatively distant locations.
  • As a result, IDL is extremely important in maintaining strong coordination between the date and the day, which constantly varies due to travel.
  • IDL is very useful in controlling traffic schedules globally.

(2) The day starts in Pacific Ocean on the earth

Answer :

If the new day had begun on any land section, it would have caused uncertainty about the day and date to the west and east of that location. To prevent this, the new date and day begin and end on IDL. IDL is based on the 180° meridian that runs through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, the new day begins in the Pacific Ocean on Earth.

Question 4.

Write in brief:

(1) What considerations have been made while deciding the IDL?

Answer :

  • On IDL, a new day and date for the world begin.
  • The day and date running west of IDL is always one day ahead of the day and date running east of IDL.
  • IDL, unlike the 180° meridian, is not a straight line.
  • The 180° meridian runs through some countries' territories.
  • If the 180° meridian been considered IDL, it would have resulted in a considerable deal of confusion between two different days and dates in the same country. As a result, an attempt was undertaken to route the IDL through a sea/water body.
  • Besides, it was also ensure that a group of islands belonging to one country shall come- to one side of IDL.
  • Hence, the ideal is not a straight line. At places, it turns east or the west.

(2) While crossing the IDL, what changes will you make?

Answer :

  • If IDL is crossed while travelling east, the prior day and date will be considered rather than the original date of travel.
  • If the IDL is crossed while travelling west, the next day and date will be taken into account rather than the original day of travel.

(3) Why is the IDL not a straight line like the 1800 meridian?

Answer :

  • If the 180° meridian been considered IDL, it would have resulted in a considerable deal of confusion between two different days and dates in the same country. As a result, an attempt was undertaken to route the IDL through a sea/water body.
  • Besides, it was also ensure that a group of islands belonging to one country shall come- to one side of IDL.
  • Hence, the ideal is not a straight line. At places, it turns east or the west.

(4) Why doesn’t the IDL pass through land?

Answer :

  • If IDL had travelled across a country's land area, it would have caused confusion between two different dates and days in the same country.
  • Furthermore, being an imaginary line, it would have been difficult to track when and where the IDL was crossed.
  • To minimise confusion, the International Date Line was drawn such that it only passes over the Pacific Ocean.

(5) Why is the IDL considered with respect to the 1800 meridian only?

Answer :

With some exceptions, 180° meridian passes maximum over the water part/ ocean. Hence, 180°meridian was used to draw the IDL.

Question 5.

Using an atlas, tell in which of the following routes the IDL will be crossed and show them on the map.

(1) Mumbai- London- New York- Los Angeles- Tokyo

(2) Delhi- Kolkata- Singapore- Melbourne

(3) Kolkata- Hong Kong- Tokyo- San Francisco

(4) Chennai-Singapore- Tokyo- Sydney-Santiago

(5) Delhi-London-New York

Answer :

(1) Mumbai- London- New York- Los Angeles- Tokyo : Not crossing IDL

(2) Delhi- Kolkata- Singapore- Melbourne : Not crossing IDL

(3) Kolkata- Hong Kong- Tokyo- San Francisco : Yes, crossing IDL

(4) Chennai-Singapore- Tokyo- Sydney-Santiago : Yes, crossing IDL

(5) Delhi-London-New York : Not crossing IDL
