Solutions

Question 1. Choose the correct option:

(a) Like there are landforms on land, ocean floor also has submerged landforms because ……

(i) There is land under water

(ii) There are volcanoes under water

(iii) Land is continuous and there is water in deeper parts.

(iv) Though land is continuous, its level is not the same everywhere like that of water.

Answer :

(iv) Though land is continuous, its level is not the same everywhere like that of water.

(b) Which part of the ocean floor is most useful to the man ?

(i) Continental shelf

(ii) Continental slope

(iii) Abyssal plains

(iv) Marine deeps

Answer :

(i) Continental shelf

(c) Which one of the following option is related to marine deposits?

(i) Rivers, glaciers, remains of plants and animals

(ii) Volcanic ash, continental shelf, remains of plants and animals

(iii) Volcanic ash, lava, fine particles of soil

(iv) Volcanic ash, remains of plants and animals, abyssal plains

Answer :

(iii) Volcanic ash, lava, fine particles of soil

Question 2. (a) Name the landforms shown in the figure.

(b) Which of these landforms is useful for deep sea research?

(c) Which of these are appropriate to be used for the protection of marine borders and naval-base building?

Answer :

(a) Name the landforms shown in the figure :

1- Marine Deep

2- Submerged Mountain

3-Submarine Plateau

4- Marine Trench

5- Continental slope

6-Continental shelf

(b) Landforms is useful for deep sea research :

Submarine plateau and marine trench are the landforms useful for deep sea research.

(c) Continental shelf is appropriate to be used for the protection of marine borders and naval base building.

Question 3. Give geographical reasons:

(a) The study of ocean floor is useful to man.

Answer :

  • The sea bottom contains a variety of minerals, rocks, and tiny soil particles, as well as the remains of marine plants and animals.
  • The study of the ocean floor is useful for studying marine life, mineral riches, and the process of volcanic eruption.

(b) The continental shelf is a paradise for fishing activity.

Answer :

  • Because the continental shelf is the shallowest region of the ocean floor, sunlight easily penetrates there.
  • As a result of this action, algae, plankton, and other organisms flourish on a massive scale on the continental shelf. Fish eat algae, plankton, and other organisms, hence fish can be found on a big scale in the continental shelf.
  • As a result, the continental shelf is a fishing paradise.

(c) Some marine islands are actually the peaks of sea mountains.

Answer :

  • Submerged hills are hundreds of kilometres broad and thousands of km long hills found on the ocean floor.
  • Some of the buried hills have peaks that rise above sea level. These peaks are the visible land features that are surrounded by sea on all sides. These summits are known as islands. As a result, some marine islands are truly sea mountain peaks.

(d) The continental slope is considered to be the boundary of continents.

Answer :

  • Continental slope lies beyond the continental shelf. The deep abyssal plain begins beyond the continental slope.
  • Therefore, the continental slope is considered to be the boundary of continents.

(e) The disposal of waste materials in the oceans by man is harmful to the environment.

Answer :

Man's disposal of waste items in the oceans promotes sea water pollution, and this discarded waste material harms the lives of marine animal life and marine plants.

As a result, human garbage dumping in the oceans is damaging to the ecosystem.

Question 4. Observe the map on Pg 27 in 'Give it a try' and answer the following questions:

(a) Madagascar and Sri Lanka are related to which landform of the ocean floor?

Answer :

Madagascar and Sri Lanka are related to island of the ocean floor.

(b) Near which continent are these land forms located?

Answer :

Madagascar is located near the continent of Africa and Sri Lanka is located near the continent of Asia.

(c) Which islands in our country are examples of peaks of submerged mountains?

Answer :

Andaman and Nicobar Islands in our country are examples of peaks of submerged mountains.
