Explain with reasons whether the following statements are true or false.

(1) The United Nations General Assembly is a platform to discuss global problems.

Answer :

Statement is True.

Reasons : The General Assembly is comprised of all member countries. In the General Assembly sessions, which take place every year from September to December, they meet to discuss important issues and make policy decisions on global issues.

(2) The status of all the member nations of the United Nations is not equal.

Answer :

  • All member nations have equal standing in the General Assembly.
  • All countries, rich or poor, large or small, are in the same position.
  • Every member state has the right to participate in debate and vote on General Assembly resolutions.

(1) Veto

  • According to the procedure, the Security Council can make a decision with the approval of all five permanent members and four non-permanent members.

(2) UNICEF

Answer :

  • The United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, is a United Nations-affiliated organisation.
  • It works to ensure that children have access to nutritious food and health care.
  • Several workshops were held in India to identify solutions to infant and child malnutrition.

Answer the following questions in brief.

(1) Write the reasons for the establishment of the United Nations.

Answer :

  • The League of Nations that was established after the First World War did not succeed in preventing the second world war.
  • However, after the use of the nuclear weapon; in the Second World War and destruction caused by it, the idea that such destructive wars should be stopped took roots.
  • It was felt that it was the collective responsibility of all nations to preserve peace.

(2) What is the role of the Peacekeeping Forces of the United Nations.

Answer :

  • The United Nations' peacekeeping mission consists of creating favourable conditions for the establishment of permanent peace in conflict-torn areas.
  • The peacekeeping forces assist these areas in moving toward peace.
  • Security is provided in conflict-affected areas while assistance is extended to restore peace.
  • Peacekeeping is one of the tasks assigned to the United Nations in order to protect and foster global peace.

 

(3) Write the objectives of the United Nations.
