Introduction :

Globe and Map Device Comparison :

Globe Map
A globe is spherical. A map is flat
We can only view one side of the earth at a time while using a globe. A map allows us to see the entire area of the earth at the same time.
A globe can be called a model of the earth. A map can be used for studying a particular region in detail.

Dimensional object :

Two dimensional object :

  • A surface/ object having two dimensions, length and width, is called two dimensional object. g., paper, blackboard, table top, land, etc.
  • The product of length and width of two dimensional objects provides their area.

Three dimensional object :

  • An object having three dimensions such as length, width, height (or thickness) is called three dimensional object. g. duster, box, glass, pot, hill, the moon, etc.
  • The product of length, width and height of three dimensional objects provides their volume.

Maps :

  • Maps are two dimensional.
  • Maps can be used to study the whole world or also regions of limited extent.

A Globe :

  • A globe is three dimensional.
  • It is a representative model of the entire earth.

The following features can be shown on a very small globe

  • Parallels of latitudes and meridians of longitudes.
  • Countries, islands, gulfs, bays, seas, oceans, etc.

A Field Visit :

  • A field visit is an important method of studying geography.
  • Field visits help us to understand the geographical and social conditions of a place
  • In field visits, information can be collected by questionnaires and interviews.

Feld visit method :

  • A field visit (educational trip) is an important method of studying geography
  • A field visit involves visiting locations such a planetarium, post office, bus stop, mall, hill, seashore, etc.
  • Field visits help us to understand the geographical, social and economical conditions of a place.
  • Information can be collected in field visits using questionnaires and interviews with locals.

EARTHA :

  • EARTHA is the largest operational globe in the world. It is housed at Yarmouth in the State of Maine in the United States of America.
  • The rotation and revolution speed of this globe is maintained as per that of the earth.
Know This :

  • A wire globe must first be created before drawing a map of the entire earth.
  • The globe has a light source inside of it.
  • The wire graticule projection is then obtained on paper.
  • Maps are created using this projection.
  • So, in order to construct a map of the earth or any portion of it, a graticule is required.
  • This is how a three-dimensional globe is converted into a two-dimensional map that can be printed.
