Weather and Climate

Class 6th-Geography-Chapter-4

Notes

Topics to be Learn :

  • Seasons
  • Weather
  • Climate
  • Elements of weather

Seasons :

In India, there are three different seasons that last from January to December.

  • Summer : February, March, April, May
  • Rainy Season : June, July, August, September
  • Winter : October, November, December, January

Clothes use :

  • We use special clothes like raincoat, jackets, etc. if it is raining
  • We use woollen clothes in winter season.
  • We mainly use thin cotton clothes in summer season.

Weather :

  • Short lived atmospheric conditions prevailing at a place and at a given time is called weather.

Climate :

  • The average weather condition of a place observed over a long period of time is called climate of that region.

Elements of weather :

  • The elements of weather include temperature, air pressure, winds, moisture, and precipitation.
  • The elements of weather have an impact on our daily routines and way of life.

Temperature :

  • The sun heats the surface of the world. The surface becomes heated as a result.
  • The air temperature drops as we move above sea level, e.g. Climate of Mahabaleshwar is cool because it is located at high altitude (high above the sea level) in Sahyadri Mountain
  • The temperature also goes on decreasing from the equator towards both the poles.

Air pressure :

  • A pressure created by the weight of air, is called air pressure.
  • There is a greater air pressure near the surface of the earth and it decreases with increasing height. This is vertical air pressure.
  • Temperature zones lead to changes in air pressure. These changes occur in at horizontal manner. This gives rise to Winds.

Winds :

  • Air starts moving from high pressure areas towards low pressure areas in a horizontal direction. This moving air is called wind.
  • The speed of wind depends on the amount of difference in air pressure.

Moisture :

  • The air that has greater amount of vapour is called humid air. The humidity in the atmosphere is called moisture.
  • Air with higher temperature holds greater amount of moisture.
  • Air near the sea area having higher temperature holds a greater amount of moisture. Therefor the climate near the sea is humid.

Precipitation :

  • Condensing of vapour in the atmosphere into water droplets or snow particles and their showering on the earth is called precipitation.
  • Rainfall, snowfall, hailstorm, etc. are forms of precipitation.

Difference between weather and climate :

Weather Climate
Weather is described on the basis of the conditions prevailing at the given time Climate is described on the basis of conditions prevailing over a longer period of time.
Weather keeps on changing frequently and we can experience changes in the weather easily. Changes in the climate take place over a longer period. These changes are not perceived so easily.

Factors influencing climate :

  • Latitudinal position, height above the sea level, nearness to ocean, oceanic currents, etc. are the main factors influencing the climate of a region.
  • Mountain ranges, types of land, local winds, etc. are the other factors affecting climatic conditions.

Examples :

  • Mumbai lies near the Arabian Sea. Therefore, the climate of Murnbai is hot and humid.
  • Mussoorie is located at high altitude in the Himalayan range of mountains. Therefore, the climate of Mussoorie is cold.
Know This :

The climate affects the entire living world in different ways.

Life mostly thrives in regions which have a conducive climate.

The climate also influences the diet, shelter, etc. of living things.

The distribution of water on the earth is also a controlling factor of the climate.
