Transport :

Meaning of Transport :

  • The service which enables the movement of goods and. Travelling of people from one place to another is called transportation.
  • Transportation is a basic infrastructure.
  • Cars, bike, rickshaw, truck, train, goods train, boat, ships, helicopter, aeroplane, etc. are the means of transportation.

Transport alternatives :

  • If there are many ways and means of transport available, then we can think about those alternatives.
  • There are roadways, railways, waterways, airways and pipelines by which transportation can be done.

  • Railways are comparatively speedy mode of transportation.

The factors like distance, physiography, market, climate, products, time, cost, duration, etc. are to be considered and accordingly one should take a right route and means of transportation.

  • Transportation helps in the development of industries and markets. It also boosts the economic growth and helps to increase Per Capita Income (PCI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Study of patterns of transport routes with help of the maps :

  • While reading a map, we can easily study the patterns of transport routes.
  • With the help of maps, we can see the distribution of transport routes in the form of dense network at some places and sparse networks at others. We can also see that in some places, there are no transport routes at all.
  • With the help of maps, we can study the effect of mountains, valleys, rivers, etc. on the patterns of transport routes.

Communication :

Like transportation, communication is also a basic infrastructure.

Communication or exchange of information is an important process in today’s era.

In today’s modern age, man-made satellites are an important and effective means of communication.

  • Letter, newspapers, radio, television are the conventional means of communication. It may not facilitate the direct interaction between the sender and the receivers of information.
  • Mobile phone, internet, etc. are the modern means of communication. Modern means of communication facilitates the direct interaction between the sender and the receivers of information.

  • The exchange of messages through mobiles, watching programmes on television, getting updates of climatic conditions, etc. is possible simultaneously through man-made satellites.
  • Satellite images obtained by remote sensing facilitate study of resources on earth’s surface and helps in regional planning.
  • In this age of the internet and social media, everyone needs to use communication system.
  • The government of India is incentivizing the use of online trading, payments, money transfer, etc. Many apps (applications) which can be used on mobile phones have been developed for the same.
  • For example, BHIM app, SBI Anywhere, etc. By using these communicational facilities, we can pay various bills, sell and buy goods and services and carry other such transactions.
  • Nowadays, communication is not just limited to talking on telephones or sending messages but also video calling is available now. Through video conferencing, we can talk to many people at a time.

  • Besides facilities, means of communication have a few threats associated with them.
  • Many crimes are happening through internet like website/email hacking, fraud, theft, attack, wars and terrorism. Possibilities of threats like theft of information, economic frauds, attacking important websites, etc. arise.
  • Therefore, one should take precautions while using social networks.
  • One should not reveal personal information before ensuring safety.
  • One should not put any sensitive information or personal information on social networking sites, blogs, etc.
